Our client, a growing power engineering and infrastructure firm, is seeking a Mid-Level Substation Engineer to support the design and development of high-voltage substation projects as part of a multidisciplinary power delivery team. This role will contribute to physical substation design packages, engineering calculations, construction drawings, equipment layouts, grounding plans, bills of material, and other project deliverables. The position is well suited for an engineer with hands-on substation design experience who can work independently while continuing to develop professionally under the guidance of senior engineers and project leadership. This full-time position is located in Boise, ID. Responsibilities: Support the design of high-voltage substation systems and components in accordance with client standards, industry codes, and project requirements. Develop and revise physical substation design deliverables, including general arrangement drawings, electrical layouts, grounding plans, equipment layouts, conduit/cable routing, and bills of material. Perform engineering calculations related to grounding, lightning protection, equipment sizing, clearances, cable/conduit sizing, and other substation design requirements. Assist with preliminary engineering, detailed design, bid packages, and construction drawing packages for substation projects. Coordinate with senior engineers, designers, project managers, vendors, and other discipline leads to support project execution. Review drawings and design documents for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards. Support quality control reviews and incorporate feedback from senior engineers and clients. Assist with technical documentation, design reports, specifications, and project deliverables. Support construction activities by helping respond to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and resolving field-related design questions. Participate in project meetings and communicate technical updates clearly with internal teams. Travel to client sites, project sites, and field locations as needed. Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university. 3-6 years of experience in substation engineering, power delivery, or high-voltage electrical design. Hands-on experience with physical substation design, including general arrangements, equipment layouts, grounding, conduit/cable routing, and bills of material. Experience supporting high-voltage substation design packages, ideally 69kV and above. Understanding of applicable industry codes and standards, including IEEE, NEC, NESC, ANSI, and utility/client standards. Experience performing basic engineering calculations and supporting technical design reviews. Ability to work within a multi-discipline engineering team and manage assigned deliverables. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley Substation, Autodesk Inventor, ETAP, WinIGS, or similar software. FE/EIT certification or PE licensure preferred. Utility consulting, EPC, or power delivery consulting experience. Experience with 115kV or 230kV substation projects. Familiarity with protection and control interfaces, relay panels, SCADA, and substation integration. Experience supporting construction drawing packages and responding to RFIs/submittals. Position Responsibilities:

  • Design electrical support hardware for multiple platforms conforming to various specifications, both military and commercial. Design would be, but not limited to, interface cables, test panels, electrical test sets, electronic testers, and interface devices
  • Work from a requirement and convert that requirement into high quality Automated Test hardware
  • Create requirements to write Test Program Sets (TPS) to test a Unit Under Test (UUT)
  • Develop supplier procurement packages
  • Interface with multiple disciplines, including Supplier Management and Procurement, Logistics Engineering, Technical Publications, Training, Quality Assurance, and others
  • Generate estimates and statements of work to support customer proposals
  • Demonstrate knowledge/experience with DSP card design or other circuit board design
  • Accomplish equipment design, generate drawings, and support hardware fabrication, integration and testing
  • Investigate emerging technologies to develop concepts for future product designs to meet projected requirements
  • Support fielded hardware and software over the entire product lifecycle
  • Assist suppliers with fabricating to our engineering drawings
  • This job includes working with both internal and external customers
  • This position will require a candidate that is a self-starter with initiative, as the candidate must be able to work independently while effectively coordinating with stakeholders to ensure timely completion of tasks

Controls Design Engineering (CDE)

The CDE team provides Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS) design coordination globally.

The team’s goal is to deliver consistent standards for data center controls systems, as well as overall mechanical and electrical design practices. Due to the critical nature and complexity of designing, installing, and maintaining a BMS/EPMS, the CDE team is the primary owner of the associated specification, points list, Basis of Design and scope documents within a large infrastructure engineering team.

The CDE team is a single point of contact for multiple internal and external customers, uniting the efforts associated with:

  • New construction builds
  • Legacy site enhancement projects
  • Data center service projects

In a continual effort to enhance the controls systems, the CDE team collaborates through design review, drives consistent standards, and collects feedback data to arrive at unified documented solutions. Due to the efforts of maintaining, updating, and distributing BMS/EPMS standards, the CDE engineer will drive significant reductions in change order expense, scope gaps between contractors, construction schedule delays, single-sourced vendor pricing, and reduced vendor project management and engineering labor costs.

This position is for an EPMS Controls Design Engineer. Key responsibilities and requirements for this role include:

  • Knowledge of EPMS programming and design, Modbus communication protocol, electrical distribution systems, single-line diagrams, complex electrical concepts, and data center redundancy
  • Review MEP drawings with a focus on electrical drawing sets for EPMS design content
  • Create EPMS scopes of work (SOW), provide RFI support, and review technical vendor proposals during bid review process
  • Coordinate with each regional project manager to review and finalize project SOWs
  • Review electrical Long Lead Equipment (LLE) submittals to ensure EPMS scope is captured
  • Attend Factory Witness Tests (FWTs) and Equipment Qualification Tests (EQTs) to perform EPMS point validation and test EPMS device functionality on first of kind electrical equipment
  • Create, update, and maintain controls points list and specifications, EPMS drawing templates, Basis of Design (BOD) documentation, and project specific SOW documents
  • Develop and disseminate specification documents for global projects
  • Lead and facilitate collaboration with multiple teams including construction, programmers, MEP/ACS engineers, and team managers as necessary to accomplish initiative goals
  • Manage and prioritize requests for information on new construction builds, existing site facilities support, and legacy site enhancement projects
  • Serve as central point of contact for multiple internal and external groups regarding EPMS design standards
  • Ability to successfully operate in high security critical environments while maximizing productivity.
  • Drive innovation of new solutions to support initiatives, team, and company goals
  • Interaction with AWS cloud services and other applications to present, archive and analyze accumulated data

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS - 5+ years of relevant work in a data center or other critical environment experience
