The Opportunity

As a dedicated Life and Annuity Principle-Based Reserving Life Actuary Lead, you will be responsible for technical leadership and process implementation for the calculation, reporting, and forecasting of Life and Annuity Principle-Based Reserves. They will work with the leaders of the Life and Annuity reserving and forecasting teams to ensure that we are compliant with the NAIC valuation manual while creating the processes and controls to optimize these deliverables.

Coordinates, prepares, and performs highly complex or specialized actuarial analyses required to develop new products, project future results, re-price existing products, and/or determine financial strength, while also mentoring junior members of the team in these key disciplines.

This role is remote eligible in the continental U.S. with occasional business travel. However, individuals residing within a 60-mile radius of a USAA office will be expected to work on-site add LOB appropriate number three or four days per week.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you’ll do:

  • Performs the most complex and unique work assignments that require a high degree of technical expertise utilizing actuarial modeling software driven models for pricing, valuation, and/or risk management.
  • Reviews laws and regulations to ensure all processes are compliant and provides recommendations for improvements. Monitors industry communications regarding potential changes to existing laws and regulations.
  • Oversees model runs and the generation of reports and presents comprehensive analysis of all model runs to Senior Leadership.
  • Makes comprehensive recommendations for model adjustments and improvements, when appropriate.
  • Applies a holistic understanding of the business operations and analytics to influence business strategies and solutions.
  • Manages the most complex projects involving cross-functional actuarial areas and across the enterprise.
  • Leads project team through concept, planning, execution, and implementation phases.
  • Defines and outlines new approaches to resolution.
  • Anticipates, directs, organizes, and oversees the development of reporting resources, and works to improve reporting processes and controls. Reviews and produces reporting with great attention to detail. Identifies and resolves reporting problems independently.
  • Advises senior management on issues and serves as a primary resource for cross functional team members on escalated issues of a unique nature.
  • Leads and directs model or process governance, integrity, quality, and validation functions utilizing expert knowledge of the business, its products, and processes.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • 8 years actuarial experience and attainment of Fellow within the Society of Actuaries; OR 16 years relevant actuarial experience and attainment of Associate within the Society of Actuaries.

  • Experience advising senior management on issues and serving as a primary resource for cross functional team members on escalated issues of a unique nature.

  • Demonstrated holistic understanding of the business operations and analytics with ability to communicate clearly to influence business strategies and solutions with key stakeholders.

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $164,780-$314,960.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a credentialed Lead Actuary to join our Property Loss Reserving and Reserving Development team. This Lead Actuary leverages expert, broad actuarial knowledge in at least one actuarial practice area (pricing, reserving, modeling, catastrophe risk, claims analytics, product management, etc.) to identify, define, and design solutions for complex, thought-provoking problems that drive business results at the LOB level. This Lead Actuary will leverage advanced knowledge of Loss Reserving techniques, statistical modeling and claims analytics insights to explain drivers of loss trends .

What you’ll do:

  • Apply deep and broad actuarial knowledge to identify, define, and design solutions to complex problems with ambiguous requirements (e.g., end-to-end design of rate level indications process for a new product; independently shapes and transforms all aspects of machine learning and AI for a product: (data selection, model selection, stakeholder communications, performance monitoring, etc.); independently runs catastrophe models for advanced ad-hoc analyses; provides guidance and training to peers for running and validating the catastrophe models; enhances current methodologies to tailor catastrophe model results to better represent USAA’s risk; designs and performs broad and complex actuarial analyses that produces actionable insights for company-level decision-making designs reserving methodology and technical platform for new product.
  • Utilize advanced actuarial, mathematical, or statistical techniques to augment actuarial work product, methodologies, and procedures.
  • Lead special actuarial projects, such as the development of new pricing methodologies or reporting tools to impact LOB-level initiatives.
  • Provide thought and/or technical expertise on complex topics and influences key stakeholders on business decisions.
  • Lead cross-functional actuarial initiatives.
  • Strategically partner with IT to influence the design, alignment, and implementation of technical business standards.
  • Manage USAA vendor relationship(s).
  • Assist the business unit with translating strategic objectives into tactical solutions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of market trends and emerging risks and proactively develops strategies, policies, and processes to address them.

  • Advanced knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in Python, R, SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating complex solutions and analysis to cross-functional audiences, including executive leadership.
