As an FPGA Design Research Engineer, you will have the opportunity to architect and develop state-of-the-art embedded systems for real-time controls and industrial communication applications. You will lead and contribute to R&D projects that are aligned with GE Vernova’s energy businesses such as Renewables, Gas Power, Power Conversion, Hydro, and Grid Solutions. Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop FPGA solutions for embedded systems and industrial control systems (ICS).
  • Leverage FPGA design tools to develop, simulate, test, and optimize real-time embedded systems.
  • Shape and pursue external opportunities with U.S. government agencies such as the DOE and DOD.
  • Work with GE businesses to help transition real-time embedded controls and communication systems from early-stage lab demonstrations to fieldable prototypes.
  • Collaborate with universities, industrial consortiums, commercial partners, and others to advance the state of the art in embedded systems.
  • Publish technical papers, file patents, and contribute to open-source communities.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines OR Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines with a minimum of 2 years of industry experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines with a minimum of 5 years of industry experience.
  • 2-5 years of strong FPGA and SoC design experience using Verilog, SystemVerilog and VHDL
  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience with Xilinx and/or Intel (Altera) FPGA devices, tools, and ecosystems
  • 2-5 years of solid understanding of digital logic design, including FSMs, pipelining, and resource optimization.
  • 2-5 years of experience with RTL simulation, synthesis, place-and-route, and timing closure
  • 2-5 years of knowledge of clock domain crossing (CDC) techniques and metastability mitigation
  • 2-5 years of familiarity with high-speed and standard interfaces (UART, SPI, I²C, Ethernet, PCIe, DDR)
  • 2-5 years of experience developing testbenches and performing functional verification.
  • 2-5 years of proficiency with on-chip debugging tools (e.g., ILA, SignalTap)
  • 2-5 years of ability to read and interpret schematics, timing diagrams, and hardware datasheets
  • 2-5 years of experience using version control systems (Git preferred)
  • 2-5 years of experience with high-level synthesis (HLS) tools and algorithm-to-hardware workflows, including Vitis HLS and integration with MathWorks MATLAB/Simulink for model-based design and verification.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience with the development of real-time embedded applications and systems on microcontrollers, FPGAs, x86, and/or ARM processors.
  • Strong embedded programming skills (e.g., C/C++, C#, Python, etc.).
  • Experience with Linux build systems (e.g., Yocto).
  • Working knowledge of Linux driver and/or kernel development
  • Experience writing firmware and with low-level programming (e.g., microcontrollers).
  • Working knowledge of real-time operating systems (e.g., QNX, RTLinux, or VxWorks).
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies such as hypervisors, Docker containers, etc.
  • Experience with CI/CD technologies (e.g., GitLab, Jenkins, etc.).

The Boeing Emulation Team is currently seeking an Associate Hardware Emulation Engineer. This team is responsible for developing software models that emulate the behavior and functionality of hardware components and systems, providing an all-software test and integration environment for various Boeing projects across Commercial Airplanes, Defense and Space platforms, training devices, and autonomous platforms.

In this role, you will leverage your experience and technical skills to lead the architecture and design of emulation solutions that meet the rigorous demands of our diverse projects. Hands-on experience with virtualization technologies such as KVM and QEMU will be essential, as will familiarity with software development practices in GitLab. Understanding ARM, PowerPC, or x86 microprocessor architectures, along with common avionics data buses and interfaces, will further enhance your ability to deliver effective emulation solutions. Familiarity with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and hardware description languages (HDL) will also be beneficial in this role.

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is looking for you to join us as a Principal Engineer, Embedded Software - Manufacturing Test Engineering (RF Systems) based on-site in Rolling Meadows, IL.

This position will support software efforts associated with testing of Radio Frequency (RF) production hardware in a dynamic, fast-paced and technically challenging production environment.

This individual will be responsible for all aspects of test software development from requirements capture through final validation and release. A successful person in this role will be very effective at leading collaboration with the product Design Engineer, the Test Hardware Engineer, the Quality Assurance Engineer and the Manufacturing Technician. This position would include providing needed efforts to set up and support the acceptance testing of the Shop Replaceable Units, as well as acceptance testing and environmental screening at the payload (Line Replaceable Unit) level. This position will support aerial, military-grade, or space-grade Electronic Warfare Systems and Subsystems.

What you will get to do:

  • Support to Production: Review and make needed updates to software governing how test equipment operates. Troubleshoot discrepancies in software packages. Coordinate with Electrical Design Engineering, Software & Firmware Engineering, Production technician, Project Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Quality organizations to meet contractual acceptance testing and environmental screening commitments.
  • Software design - coding & integration/validation: Investigate, design, and provide solutions to meet new or modified testing requirements.
  • Test procedure development/Maintenance: Generate and maintain/revise Manufacturing Acceptance testing procedures, Environmental Screening procedures, hardware drawings of test equipment and fixtures.
  • Continuous improvement: Review of quality metrics to identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to reduce cost, cycle time, defects.
  • Testability reviews: Collaborate with design engineering to achieve testability in new and updated product design.
  • Interface/communicate with multiple levels of leadership, clients, and vendors.

Building a strong professional relationship with other Manufacturing disciplines (Process Engineering, Project Management, Shop Operations, Mission Assurance), strong decision-making skills and a high-level ethical standard is essential.

Basic Qualifications for the Manufacturing Test Software Engineer (RF Systems)

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science, Electrical and/or Computer Engineering or related STEM degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience; OR a Master of Science (MS) degree in equivalent fields with a minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience.
  • Experience using C# (and/or Lab Windows CVI or Java).
  • Experience with use of RF test instruments such as (but not limited to) Oscilloscope, Signal Generator, Spectrum Analyzer, Network Analyzer, etc.
  • Familiarity with reading schematics and interpreting electrical one-lines.
  • Active DoD Security Clearance.
  • US Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications for the Manufacturing Test Software Engineer (RF Systems)

  • 5 or more years of experience in electronic hardware Manufacturing environment and/or electronic hardware software or firmware design environment preferred.
  • Python and MATLAB experience is a highly preferred plus.
  • Prior test equipment, fixture or prime hardware troubleshooting experience preferred.
  • Experience in troubleshooting unit under test.
  • Experience completing software projects involving software design/development activities as well as integration and validation activities/efforts on schedule and on budget.
  • Experience using Agile practices and/or performing Earned Value.

Primary Level Salary Range: $108,800.00 - $163,200.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.   • 3-5 years of ERP development. Infor Syteline / CSI development & administration experience a plus.
