The Opportunity

As a dedicated Fraud Strategy Analyst Senior , you will be accountable for driving USAA’s overall fraud strategy, policies, and analytic capabilities for fraud rules management. This role will collaborate with key stakeholders across the enterprise, influencing outcomes in a complex, matrixed environment. This role will be an active participant in industry efforts to share and receive information, build industry partnerships and relations to formulate USAA’s global fraud strategies and policies to better protect USAA from current, evolving, and future fraud threats.

This role is remote eligible in the continental U.S. with occasional business travel. However, individuals residing within a 60-mile radius of a USAA office will be expected to work on-site 4 days per week. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you’ll do:

  • Serves as an expert in multiple areas of focus within Financial Crimes space and facilitates discussions with team members to solution towards the strategic business direction.

  • Takes ownership of small- and large-scale analyses or business strategy initiatives using advanced innovative/quantitative analytical approaches.

  • Extracts insights from large, complex data sets to design solutions within the Financial Crimes space through a range of data preparation, modeling, and visualization techniques, including predictive analysis, pattern recognition and/or Machine Learning.

  • Utilizes association rule learning, cluster analysis, anomaly detection, data analysis and visualization (e.g., Power BI , Tableau), and object-oriented programming (Python, SAS) too .

  • Provides insights into leadership related to additional resource needs ranging from IT investments, 3rd party support or additional analysts.

  • Consults with the business to understand the business direction, environment and strategies for supported domains/clients; gathers requirements to recommend solutions and influence the business and drive change.

  • Advocates for self and teammates to encourage the growth of direct and indirect peers toward continual technical and soft skill progression.

  • Serves as a resource for mathematical skills, business product knowledge, and/or Financial Crimes knowledge.

  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified , measured, monitored , and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

    What you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree: OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required ) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • 6 years of experience in financial crimes supporting and participating in stakeholder consultation, needs assessment, requirement translation and prescription of technology solutions.

  • Previous experience gathering business requirements and applying business rules to recommend technology solutions.

  • Demonstrated experience using fraud rules management to recommend strategies that reduce or mitigate loss and fraud exposures.

  • Knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.

  • Strong knowledge of bank laws and regulations related to money movement and /or payments, including but not limited to Reg E, Reg CC, UDAAP, FACTA and Reg Z.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to synthesize data and clearly reporting findings.

    What sets you apart:

  • At least 8 years of Data Analytics experience leveraging Snowflake SQL and/or SAS in financial services industry.

  • At least 2 years of AI/ML experience using Python for exploratory data analytics.

  • Experience with managing data for customer facing identity proofing and authentication tools and products.

  • Data Mining experience for complex analytics and partner with Technology teams to perform Data Mapping.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated willingness to actively participate in discussions, ask clarifying questions, and present analytical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Preferred experience with Member Authentication and Join Process in addition to Identity Proofing.

  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner .

    Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $ 114,080 - $ 218,030 .

This position requires an active U.S. Government Security Clearance at the TS/SCI level with CI Polygraph.

This project supports a hard and deeply buried target mission set, providing critical analytic insights to government stakeholders. Success depends on the development of accurate, scalable, and mission-tailored data solutions that enable timely and informed decision-making. The work directly impacts national security objectives by transforming complex data into actionable intelligence in a highly specialized and sensitive domain.

Responsibilities:

  • Automate and maintain data extraction, cleaning, processing, and analysis workflows using Python, SQL, and ETL tools under established best practices.

  • Process and analyze structured and unstructured datasets using big data or cloud-native frameworks (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, or managed cloud services).

  • Develop, test, and evaluate predictive models and statistical analyses to support mission-focused use cases.

  • Contribute to end-to-end data science and data engineering workflows, from data preparation and feature engineering through model development and results delivery, with guidance from senior team members as needed.

  • Write clear, well-structured documentation of methods, assumptions, and results; assist with briefings or presentations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Support the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) within existing systems and workflows, including:

  • Implementing LLM-based solutions for summarization, tagging, classification, and information retrieval.

  • Integrating pre-trained LLMs into pipelines to improve knowledge discovery and data accessibility.

  • Assisting with deployment and evaluation of internal LLM-enabled tools or assistants.

  • Collaborate closely with data scientists, engineers, analysts, and mission partners to refine requirements and iterate on solutions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current/active TS/SCI security clearance and be willing and able to obtain CI polygraph.

  • 5 years of professional experience in data science, analytics, or data engineering roles.

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, engineering, statistics, GIS, or related discipline. Degree may be substituted with an additional 2 yrs of experience.

  • Strong coding proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience writing production-quality, maintainable code; working knowledge of R is a plus.

  • Hands-on experience with data manipulation, feature engineering, machine learning libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow), and automation tools.

  • Experience contributing to full-cycle data projects, including data preparation, modeling, validation, and reporting.

  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts and analytical results in writing and verbally.

  • Familiarity with NLP and LLM concepts, including practical experience applying pre-trained models (e.g., GPT-style models) for automation, summarization, or search.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment, taking direction and feedback while owning assigned technical tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in data science, computer science, statistics, engineering, or a related technical field.
