Primary Objective

Prepares clear, complete, and accurate design documentation to assist in the sale, manufacture and service of components, products, or systems.

Major Areas of Accountability

  • Works from notes, verbal instructions, sketches and drawings, or engineering specifications; consolidates the information to be used to prepare working plans, layouts, and detailed drawings.

  • Reviews the design and helps resolve the details not completely defined. Determines the best combination of all the preliminary information and contributing data to develop the final design.

  • Develops specifications, designs or drawings using engineering principals, established MTS standards, procedures, and instructions. Follows MTS best practices, policies and procedures in the design, layout, and documentation of MTS custom and standard products.

  • Provides the required level of documentation for custom or standard projects. Specific tasks may include making models, drawings and assemblies and Bill of Materials using the CAD system and other computer tools, as required. Follows all MTS CAD Best Practices for model creation, drawing creation, file management and revision control.

  • Verifies completed work; Checks dimensions, Bills of Materials, materials to be used, quantities, processing information, and adherence to Best Practices.

  • Makes reasonable and sound decisions to meet budgets (both labor and cost) and deadlines. Provides scheduling, costing and technical information concerning the designs supported as well as status updates and information to internal departments and external vendors affected by design development.

  • Resolves mechanical documentation and system problems with designed or purchased parts used in a design. Assures that any changes are documented and prepared in accordance with engineering change procedures and in a timely manner.

  • Provides regular feedback and updates to project team members and immediate supervisor about the status of design tasks.

Job Description:

Transform technology into opportunity as a Hardware Engineer with GDIT. A career in Tactical Networks hardware engineering means architecting, integrating, and sustaining the physical infrastructure that warfighters rely on. At GDIT you’ll be at the forefront of innovation-advancing Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) and related Navy tactical network capabilities with NIWC Pacific (Codes 55131/55132/55133) in support of PMW-160 Tactical Networks.

At GDIT, people are our differentiator. Our work depends on a Hardware Engineer who can lead shipboard/ashore design, integration, and installation of compute, storage, transport, and encryption hardware-and keep complex systems reliable in demanding fleet environments.

MEANINGFUL WORK AND PERSONAL IMPACT

  • Architect, build, and integrate CANES hardware stacks (server/blade/storage, GPON OLT/ONT, routing/switching, KVMs/PDUs, fiber/copper plants) across ashore, afloat, subsurface, airborne, and mobile environments.
  • Lead site surveys and produce Installation Design Packages (IDPs): rack elevations, power/HVAC calculations, block diagrams, cable running sheets, BOMs, and final as-builts; prepare FRCB, BESEP, and SHIPALT submittals.
  • Execute installations and System Operational Verification Tests (SOVTs); coordinate cutovers to minimize operational impact; document test results and corrective actions.
  • Perform Tier III troubleshooting on optical/electrical transport (DWDM/SONET/TDM/TDMoIP), GPON, and platform LANs; isolate card/port faults; drive root-cause and repair actions.
  • Provision and sustain Type-1 encryption hardware (e.g., TACLANE, KIV-7M) in coordination with Communications Security Material System (CMS) and program cyber stakeholders.
  • Ensure environmental and electromagnetic compliance (MIL-STD-810, MIL-S-901D, MIL-STD-461); support TEMPEST coordination and lab/field test readiness.
  • Maintain lab configurations within NIWC Pacific facilities; support Developmental Test & Evaluation (DT&E) and readiness events (TRRs).
  • Collaborate with PMW-160, NIWC engineers, shipyards, and platform IPTs; align hardware baselines with CMPro/CCB processes and program schedules.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED (Required):

  • Security Clearance: Active Secret clearance.
  • Experience:
  • 2+ years in hardware/system integration for enterprise or tactical networks, including rack-level integration and shipboard or DoW fielding.

Customer Requirements Management

  • Perform technical and/or project leadership for small- to medium-sized technical tasks that may involve both hardware and software.
  • Develop, integrate, and test early prototype Research and Development (R&D) systems.
  • Generate systems engineering products such as performance specifications, concepts of operation, and system architecture/engineering plans.
  • Support small focused studies involving adaptation of technology to urgent or emerging problems.

Job Description

Mission Technologies, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is searching for a qualified candidate to fill the role of Technical Support Specialist - Technical Lead (Tech Lead). The Technical Lead works onsite Navy Warfare Development Center, Norfolk Naval Station supporting Maritime Operation Center - Exercise Support Team (MOC-EST) and Naval Surface Warfare Center- Corona (NSWC-Corona) in providing Navy LVC training throughout all assigned Areas of Responsibility (AORs). The person assists with the planning, design, and execution of Operational-level Fleet Synthetic Training (FST-O) events for Fleet and task force staffs, to include assigned reserve personnel. The position also supports on-site and distributed training events at other Norfolk VA sites, as directed. The Specialist position requires interaction with Military, Government and Contractor Leadership. Communication skills are required. The position requires flexibility to work non-standard work hours and work weeks of more than 40 hours to meet business, customer, and contractual requirements.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as NSWC-Corona’s NITE FST-O technical team lead / Subject Matter Expert (SME) in support of FST-O training events. Communicate with leadership on any technical issues and new requirements.
  • Promulgate and de-conflict resource challenges in support of planning, test, and execution events.
  • Work with Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE) local and remote operators and engineers, MOC training teams, and augment personnel to coordinate and plan systems and personnel support for events. Adjust daily working hours occasionally to match times zones around the world where events are occurring. Occasional travel is required in support of event planning conferences.
  • Lead technical team in compliance with NCTE Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Recommend changes to SOPs as needed and help to develop new SOPs as fleet training requirements expand.
  • Support event testing and execution of FST-O events as technical lead as directed in approved event manning plans.
  • Maintain and increase capabilities of modeling and simulation tools, in view of current US and foreign military capabilities, trends, and tactics, and US Navy doctrine.
  • Use Confluence and JIRA tools on the NCTE website to share event schedules and documents. Identify, document, report, and track issues, while keeping appropriate NCTE personnel, NSWC- Corona, MOC-EST leadership, and other stakeholders informed of status.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field or
  • 0 years experience with Masters in related field or
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 6 years relevant experience.
  • Linux, and/or Microsoft professional certification required.
  • Security+ certification required.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must currently hold and be able to maintain a US Top Secret clearance.
  • Familiarity with networking concepts, architectures, and protocols such as TCP/IP and UDP.
  • Knowledge of distributed simulation protocols such as High Level Architecture (HLA) and Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS).
  • Military experience.
  • Experience with operational level Joint Live Virtual Constructive (JLVC) supported FST events.
  • Technical leadership skills to identify engineering domain issues and engage appropriate engineering personnel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across all organizational levels.

Preferred Requirements

  • PMP and Cisco certification desired
  • Understanding of Operational and Tactical Level of Warfare events to include Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC).
  • Experience in Navy Fleet Synthetic Training programs, experimentation and war-game operation and management to achieve training objectives.
  • Experience with Joint Exercise Life Cycle (JELC) process, timeline, and products.
  • Understanding of Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) systems and operations.
  • Experience with Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF) simulation and other High Level Architecture / Distributed Interactive Simulation (HLA/DIS) modeling tools.
  • Experience with MS Visio software to produce technical architecture drawings.

Summary

Mission Technologies, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is looking for a Systems Engineer to support the Joint Training Synthetic Environment (JTSE), JLVC Modernization effort - Joint Staff J7(JS J-7) contract at our Suffolk, VA Joint Staff Complex.

What You Will Do

• Integrate, configure, and deploy federation components within a TS enclave, including protocol bridges, simulation controllers, and data interoperability tools
• Engineer and maintain systems supporting simulation services such as:

  • HLA federation communication and RTI-based interactions
  • Simulation display and control systems
  • Terrain & geospatial data services (WMS, 3D models, raster/vector)
    • Support implementation and enhancement of Cross Domain Solutions (CDS) for secure TS-SIPR data transfer
    • Work with developers to adapt tools for TS compliance, including data tagging, secure message protocols, and required security banners/labels
    • Provide infrastructure engineering across development, staging, and production TS environments
    • Support deployment and integration of new capabilities from the development pipeline
    • Participate in DevSecOps workflows, contributing to integration, testing, accreditation, and release cycles
    • Work closely with cybersecurity teams to ensure RMF, STIG, and other compliance requirements are met
    • Support test, validation, performance, and interoperability events
    • Troubleshoot distributed systems and provide timely resolutions
    • Document architectures, configurations, and operational processes

What You Must Have

• 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 0 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 9 years relevant experience.
• Must have an active TS/SCI Clearance
• Distributed systems experience: configuring, integrating, and troubleshooting multi node systems and networked environments
• Experience with HLA or similar M&S frameworks: understanding federation concepts, RTI communication, and FOM/SOM basics
• Experience working in secure or classified environments and familiarity with TS or SIPR networks
• Demonstrates strong knowledge of DevSecOps and CI/CD practices, including automated build and test processes, effective version control usage, and secure deployment methodologies.
• Cybersecurity and system hardening knowledge: RMF awareness, STIG application, secure baselining
• Linux and/or Windows server administration: installation, patching, log analysis, and performance management
• Strong communication skills for engaging with government, military, and technical teams
• Ability to operate in fast paced, high stakes environments
• Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities

Preferred Requirements

• Experience supporting Joint LVC (JLVC) simulation federations
• Familiarity with specific HLA RTI implementations and federation management tools

• Experience with simulation tools such as JSPA, JTT SIM, RTI S, JTDS OBS, or terrain/geospatial systems
