The Boeing Company is currently seeking a Software Engineer-Hardware Emulation (Associate, Experienced or Senior) (Virtual) to support our Emulation team located in Berkeley, Missouri. This position will focus on supporting the Fabric organization.

The Boeing Emulation Team is currently seeking an Associate Hardware Emulation Engineer. This team is responsible for developing software models that emulate the behavior and functionality of hardware components and systems, providing an all-software test and integration environment for various Boeing projects across Commercial Airplanes, Defense and Space platforms, training devices, and autonomous platforms.

In this role, you will leverage your experience and technical skills to lead the architecture and design of emulation solutions that meet the rigorous demands of our diverse projects. A successful candidate will collaborate with the Software Enterprise to embrace software best practices, standards, and initiatives, positioning the flight simulation team for efficient, effective, and high-quality execution. You will work closely with the Fabric Boeing team, contributing to innovative solutions that enhance our emulation capabilities and streamline the integration of software and hardware.

Additionally, you will tackle reverse engineering challenges to discover solutions for hosting software in emulated environments. Your contributions will be vital in ensuring that our emulation tools not only meet current project requirements but also adapt to future technological advancements. Hands-on experience with virtualization technologies such as KVM and QEMU will be essential, as will familiarity with software development practices in GitLab. Understanding ARM, PowerPC, or x86 microprocessor architectures, along with common avionics data buses and interfaces, will further enhance your ability to deliver effective emulation solutions. Familiarity with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and hardware description languages (HDL) will also be beneficial in this role.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Supports the design, development, test, and integration of software models to emulate the behavior and functionality of hardware components or systems to provide an all-software test and integration environment
  • Partners with hardware engineers by contributing to the identification and review of requirements and specifications for the hardware being emulated
  • Supports the development, automation, test, integration, and administration of emulation strategies and technologies.
  • Supports the development of verification plans, test procedures and test environments, executing the test procedures and documenting test results for emulation technologies
  • Supports collecting and analyzing in-use product data to design new or enhance existing products
  • Contributes to the identification, debugging, and resolution of issues to ensure the reliability and efficiency of software products.
  • Supports advising on software domains related to emulation technologies
  • Supports creating and updating policies, practices and processes for emulation and virtualized resource management
  • Supports implementing current and emerging technologies, tools, frameworks and changes in regulations relevant to hardware emulation
  • Supports hardware emulation project management activities

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Ability to obtain Secret U.S. Secret clearance, final post-start
  • 2+ years of experience in testing or programming software written in C or C++
  • 2+ years of experience in real-time, near real-time, or embedded systems
  • 2+ years of experience with release tools (Azure DevOps, Artifactory, Gitlab, Maven), configuration management, monitoring, virtualization and containerization
  • 2+ years of experience do you have with mission/safety-critical software development

  • Knowledge of platform’s hardware, bus interfaces used by hardware to communicate with host and location of device driver software. Knowledge to write kernel mode driver, initialize software and control hardware

  • Knowledge of System Reverse Engineering, which includes deep understanding in debugging and disassembling, and code analysis. Ability to follow a systematic and iterative process that considers planning, collecting, analyzing, testing, and documenting reverse engineering findings
  • Knowledge of virtualization and extensive experience designing, developing, implementing and managing virtual environments. Knowledge of systematic approaches to drive virtualization service improvement. Ability to create a virtual machine using hardware emulations of computer systems

This position will support software efforts associated with testing of Radio Frequency (RF) production hardware in a dynamic, fast-paced and technically challenging production environment.

This individual will be responsible for all aspects of test software development from requirements capture through final validation and release. This position would include providing needed efforts to set up and support the acceptance testing of the Shop Replaceable Units, as well as acceptance testing and environmental screening at the payload (Line Replaceable Unit) level. This position will support aerial, military-grade, or space-grade Electronic Warfare Systems and Subsystems.

  • Support to Production: Review and make needed updates to software governing how test equipment operates. Troubleshoot discrepancies in software packages. Coordinate with Electrical Design Engineering, Software & Firmware Engineering, Production technician, Project Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Quality organizations to meet contractual acceptance testing and environmental screening commitments.
  • Software design - coding & integration/validation: Investigate, design, and provide solutions to meet new or modified testing requirements.
  • Test procedure development/Maintenance: Generate and maintain/revise Manufacturing Acceptance testing procedures, Environmental Screening procedures, hardware drawings of test equipment and fixtures.
  • Continuous improvement: Review of quality metrics to identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to reduce cost, cycle time, defects.
  • Testability reviews: Collaborate with design engineering to achieve testability in new and updated product design.
  • Interface/communicate with multiple levels of leadership, clients, and vendors.

Building a strong professional relationship with other Manufacturing disciplines (Process Engineering, Project Management, Shop Operations, Mission Assurance), strong decision-making skills and a high-level ethical standard is essential.

Basic Qualifications for the Manufacturing Test Software Engineer (RF Systems)

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science, Electrical and/or Computer Engineering or related STEM degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience; OR a Master of Science (MS) degree in equivalent fields with a minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience.
  • Experience using C# (and/or Lab Windows CVI or Java).
  • Experience with use of RF test instruments such as (but not limited to) Oscilloscope, Signal Generator, Spectrum Analyzer, Network Analyzer, etc.
  • Familiarity with reading schematics and interpreting electrical one-lines.
  • Active DoD Security Clearance.
  • US Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications for the Manufacturing Test Software Engineer (RF Systems)

  • 5 or more years of experience in electronic hardware Manufacturing environment and/or electronic hardware software or firmware design environment preferred.
  • Python and MATLAB experience is a highly preferred plus.
  • Prior test equipment, fixture or prime hardware troubleshooting experience preferred.
  • Experience in troubleshooting unit under test.
  • Experience completing software projects involving software design/development activities as well as integration and validation activities/efforts on schedule and on budget.

In this role, you will support the Systems Engineering Integration (SEI) Integrated Product Team (IPT).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform modeling, simulation, and analysis to support program development, execution, and related research and development projects
  • Develop mission relevant scenarios; assesses operational effectiveness of existing and/or emerging systems and capabilities in representative operational environments
  • Develop new and/or integrates existing system simulation frameworks, weapon systems components to include air vehicle platform, kinematics, sensors, communications, command & control, weapons, and threat performance models and algorithms.

Primary Responsibilities

Candidate will lead the design, development, and sustainment of health and status monitoring applications support advanced technology radar programs including development of software for high-speed data acquisition, distribution, and real-time processing; integration of COTS and custom technologies into prototype sensor systems; field testing of RF sensors and systems; deployment of advanced sensor systems; and development of health and status monitoring user applications.

  • Establish and track delivery metrics (velocity, cycle time, quality metrics, technical debt) and use them to improve predictability and quality.
