Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…

  • Have a B.S. degree in Operations Research/Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Physical Science or related field
  • Have 1+ years of professional experience related to weapon system development
  • Have experience in early concept development, performance analysis, systems integration, or requirements engineering activities for complex systems
  • Have experience developing and customizing system modeling using UML/SysML and associated software
  • Have strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills and ability to interact with sponsor representatives
  • Have experience in system engineering principles and practices
  • Are willing and able to travel periodically to Government and contractor sites within the continental U.S.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Position Overview

Join us in our fast-paced support to the Space Development Agency (SDA ). Recognized as the Department of Defense’s constructive disruptor for space acquisition, SDA delivers space-based capabilities to the joint warfighter to support terrestrial missions through development, fielding, and operation of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. SDA capitalizes on a unique business model that values speed and lowers costs by harnessing commercial development to achieve a proliferated architecture and enhance resilience. QinetiQ has an immediate opening for a systems engineer to support SDA’s enterprise operations. The candidate will provide technical expertise to government program managers across multiple satellite vendor designs. The candidate will review designs, test procedures and provide feedback and recommendations to ensure individual satellites will meet SDA’s architecture needs. Mission Technologies, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is seeking a Systems Engineer to support the Joint Training Synthetic Environment (JTSE) and JLVC Modernization initiative under the Joint Staff J7 (JS J 7) contract. This role is responsible for leading systems engineering efforts that enable modernization, interoperability, and AI integration across joint training and simulation environments.

What You Will Do

• Lead systems engineering activities across the full lifecycle, including requirements development, architecture design, integration, testing, and sustainment.
• Define and manage system requirements to support integration of foundational and frontier AI models into JTSE and Joint Training Tools.
• Develop and maintain system architectures that support real time and near real time data integration from operational and test & evaluation sources.
• Ensure interoperability across combatant commands, services, and training systems within a unified multi domain environment.
• Coordinate integration of AI enabled capabilities into simulation systems, including the Fully Informed Simulation Environment (FISE).
• Develop and maintain interface control documents (ICDs), data standards, and integration frameworks.
• Support advanced exercise planning, execution, and after action review (AAR) by ensuring systems enable accurate data collection, synchronization, and analysis.
• Collaborate with government, industry, and mission partners to align system designs with modernization objectives and operational requirements.
• Conduct system level testing, verification, and validation (V&V) to ensure performance, reliability, and mission effectiveness.
• Identify and mitigate technical risks related to system integration, scalability, and performance.
• Support DevSecOps implementation to ensure secure, continuous delivery of system capabilities.
• Document system designs, architectures, requirements, and integration processes.

What You Must Have

• 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 0 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 9 years relevant experience.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance within 45 days of hire.
• Experience with systems engineering processes, including requirements management, architecture development, system integration, and testing.
• Familiarity with distributed systems, data architectures, and interoperability challenges.
• Understanding of AI/ML concepts and how they integrate into operational systems.
• Experience creating system documentation such as requirements, architecture diagrams, and interface specifications.
• Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and manage competing priorities.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills.
• Experience working in Linux based environments.

  • Choose how best to apply systems engineering best practices to autonomy, AI, and uncrewed vehicles, ranging from early prototypes to production by the Navy and other sponsors.  Employ Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Digital Engineering practices, tailored to support prototyping projects and their transition to acquisition.
  • Lead and mentor multidisciplinary technical teams at APL who are performing design trade studies, requirements analysis, mission modeling, and prototyping of software and hardware for maritime uncrewed systems.
  • Oversee the design, integration, and testing of autonomous and remotely operated maritime vehicles and autonomous control software.
